Santhan, a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, died of a heart attack on Wednesday. Santhan alias T. Suthendraraja (55) is a Sri Lankan national. He is one of the seven released by the Supreme Court in 2022 after serving more than 20 years in jail in the former prime minister's murder case. Dean E Theranirajan of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai said that Santhan died at 7.50 am.

The doctors said that Santhan suffered a heart attack at 4 o'clock in the morning on Wednesday while he was being treated in the hospital for damaged liver. In that order, Santhan died at 7.50 am today as the treatment was unsuccessful. Officials said that legal arrangements are being made for the post-mortem of the dead body to be taken to Sri Lanka. Dean said that Santhan was admitted to the hospital from a special camp in Tiruchirappalli on January 27.
